Hi, I’m Wouter. Chartered accountant by day, bad joke enthusiast by night.
I spend my working life inside the numbers of fund investments. The Investor Experience is where I take what I’ve learned and translate it into plain, slightly silly, South African English.

From selling sweets to auditing funds

I grew up in a small town called Carletonville, and for as long as I can remember I’ve had an itch to create something. As a kid that meant selling sweets down the street, planting a vegetable garden with dreams of becoming the next grocery tycoon, and about a dozen other mini “ventures”. Most of them made me exactly zero rand, but they sparked an ambition that never left.
That itch eventually led me into chartered accountancy. I’ve now spent more than 8 years in the accounting and auditing of fund investments and structures. In plain English: I’ve had a front-row seat to how investments actually work behind the scenes.
And here’s what I noticed. None of it is as complicated as the jargon makes it sound. Investing and making people laugh are the two things I’m most passionate about, so The Investor Experience brings them together.
So these days, between spreadsheets and audit files, I make short, funny lessons and practical tools that turn “I should really learn about investing” into “oh… that actually makes sense”. If I can make it make sense, I promise you can too.
“My ultimate dream? To one day sit on a park bench, look up at a building I helped bring to life, and know I left behind something that matters.”
It’s never been just about chasing profits. It’s about building something meaningful and lasting, and helping other people do the same.
I’m an accountant, not your financial advisor
Being a chartered accountant doesn’t make me a registered financial services provider (FSP), and nothing I share is personal financial advice. I’m still figuring out how the “real world” works like everyone else.
Think of this place less like an advisor’s office and more like a coffee shop, where investors, entrepreneurs and dreamers swap stories, share ideas and laugh at a bad money pun or two. (Don’t worry, I diversify my jokes.)
What the people closest to me say
Unsolicited, unedited and, frankly, unhelpful.
“The best guy I know.”
“Yeah, he’s… fine, I guess.”
“I do not have time for your references. I am busy vacuuming. Rather go and pick up your wet towel instead of wasting my time.”
“Instead of asking for references, rather pay back the R500 you owe me. With interest.”
“Wouter? Hmph. He thinks he’s clever, but I’ve caught him googling how to boil an egg. Twice. He still doesn’t get it right. Half the time they come out like rubber balls. And don’t get me started on the time he borrowed my screwdriver set. Said he’d return it the next day. It’s been five years. FIVE. YEARS. But fine, he’s family. I suppose he’s alright… for someone who can’t tell the difference between a wrench and a hammer.”
“I asked him what he does on that investing channel. He said he teaches people how to ‘grow their money.’ I thought he meant in the garden… turns out, it’s not about tomatoes.”
“Still waiting on you to start that diet we talked about.”
“Woof Woof Grr Grr Woof.”
