What would it have been worth?
That R40 coffee isn’t R40. It’s R40 that never got the chance to grow up. Pick the things you could skip and see what they’d be worth by the time you retire if you invested the money instead. Prepare to be mildly offended.
What could you skip?
Tap anything below to add it to your list, and tap it again to take it off. Change the price to what you actually pay, and choose whether you’d skip it once or every day, week or month.
We grow the money until you retire. Regular skips carry on until then too.
Change the assumptions ▾
10% is a reasonable long-term assumption for a share-based investment, before inflation. It isn’t guaranteed, and some years will be negative.
Prices go up every year, so the coffee you skip in 20 years costs more than R40. We also use inflation to show the result in today’s money.
You don’t have to give up everything you enjoy. Pick the one thing on your list that you’d honestly not miss, and the day you get paid, move that amount into a tax-free savings account invested in a low-cost index fund. The money you never see is the money you never spend. And keep the biltong. Life is short.
Disclaimer: This calculator is for fun and education. It assumes the growth and inflation rates you choose stay the same every year, that skipped amounts are invested straight away, and it ignores fees and tax. Real investments go up and down, and past returns don’t guarantee future returns. The comparisons are rough estimates in today’s money. While we make every effort to keep the calculations accurate, we do not guarantee them, and to the extent allowed by law The Investor Experience is not liable for any loss or damage arising from inaccuracies or from your use of this calculator.
